Security

I want to share my bandwidth with Y-FI: will my personal/corporate network remain secure?

We’re thrilled you want to help us by contributing bandwidth to our mesh network.  We want to make sure that our infrastructure is the easiest to use and most secure we can be.  The Y-FI network is built on hardware from Open-Mesh technologies with easy and security always in the forefront. When you purchase an Open-Mesh gateway or repeater, installation is simple and the security of your own network will never be compromised.  the Y-FI network is gated and can not mingle with your the personal or corporate network that you have it connected to.

How Secure is the Y-FI network?

Y-FI provides the same level of wireless security as other open wireless access points (e.g. wireless hotspots in airports or hotels, home networks, coffee shops). The network is based on the IEEE 802.11b/g standard for wireless local area networks (WLANs). WLANs, which enable “over-the-air” communications, may be subject to unauthorized interception and are not inherently secure. We cannot guarantee the privacy of your data and communications while using Y-FI. We strongly recommend you practice safe Internet usage when using any wireless network:

Use only trusted websites. We support most customer provided security solutions such as virtual private networks (VPNs), personal firewalls and anti-virus software. We encourage all of our users to use such software and keep it up-to-date.

Should I do online banking or shopping on the network?

We cannot guarantee the privacy of your data and communications while using Y-FI anymore than any other open wireless access point. We strongly recommend you practice safe Internet usage when using any wireless network:

When sending or receiving private or sensitive information on the web, e.g. for Internet banking, be sure to verify that everything is done over a secure, encrypted tunnel such as SSL (https:// will appear in the url rather than http://). Use only trusted websites. We support most customer provided security solutions such as virtual private networks (VPNs), personal firewalls and anti-virus software. We encourage all of our users to use such software and keep it up-to-date.
