Y-FI is in its very infant stages. As a matter of fact it’s not even officially online. So what are we at Y-FI doing and how can you help?
Y-FI started as a project by one person with the hope and goal to use a very flexible solution to create a mesh WI-FI network in downtown York City open and free for everyone to use. The mesh relies on 2 very important parts, the internet bandwidth, and frequent repeater locations. Based on similar projects in small cities the project was born to work collectively with community organizations, businesses and individuals to create the Y-FI mesh network.
That’s where you come in.
We are currently looking for more partners in the downtown business district in the area of Central Market or the Square at George & Market Streets. If you are a downtown business or individual interested in supporting the Y-FI network you will need to purchase a Meraki gateway or repeater. You can purchase the gateway/repeater directly from us at actual cost. With a simple connection to your existing internet from the Meraki gateway you instantly supply the mesh with more bandwidth. Contact us for more information for joining our Y-FI mesh network
I don’t have high speed internet but I would like to help expand the mesh:
Repeaters play a vital part to the health and well-being of the mesh Y-FI network. If you don’t have high speed internet you still be me an excellent candidate for a repeater location. The same hardware used for the gateway described above is also used, when not connected directly back to the internet, to link wirelessly to the other repeaters and gateways.
I don’t have high speed internet to share and/or I don’t have a home or business in the target area but would like to support Y-FI financially:
We are working to link a partnership with a downtown non-profit who would purchase the network hardware on your behalf to expand the network. Please contact us directly for more information on this if you would like to make a financial donation.
Where do we go from here?
We’re working hard to rollout our first portion of the mesh network. From there we will continue to add gateways and repeaters to the network as fast as we develop support.
